On Thursday, February 4, Senators Durbin (D-IL) and Graham (SC-R) re-introduced the Dream Act of 2021. If passed, the legislation would provide a permanent lawful status to nearly two million Dreamers – immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. The permanent status would shield them from deportation and allow them to work and support their families. After meeting certain educational and background check requirements, they could continue on a path to earn their U.S. citizenship. It has been 20 years since the Dream Act was first introduced and throughout this time, many immigrant youth have lived in a state of fear and limbo all the while making significant contributions to our society and economy. Support for legalizing Dreamers among Americans and across industries has never been greater. It is time to provide a permanent solution for immigrant youth.
The Senate must act quickly and pass the Dream Act of 2021.
